Google AdWords and Google AdSense were created as online advertising systems that are used to generate revenue based on a "pay per click" system. Developed in 2000, AdWords was used by Google in order to provide an online advertising service to their customers. Customers would receive online text and banner ads and inturn would pay a fee every time their ad was clicked on. AdSense was launched in 2003 and featured a system that would give webmasters the ability to place advertisements on their sites that would generate revenue for them every time the ad was clicked. This was a way for small sites to gain income without large scale ad placements.
